Independent Press Contests

I was wondering if anyone out there has a list of contests for the writers published by indie presses.

There is always discussion, dare I say strong discussion, regarding the fact that most of the biggies in the industry are not open to indie publishing houses. For instance, MWA doesn't accept writers for Active membership unless their publisher is on the approved list; print on demand publishers are generally not on the approved list. Consequently, writers published by indie publishers can not enter or win the Edgar awards.

On the other hand, there are contests out there strictly for self-published writers. Writer's Digest, for instance, has such a reputable contest.

Which leaves the rest of us where exactly in terms of being able to enter our published novels into reputable contests?

Winning contests is good for promotion. There is always some hoopla and interest in reading the winners. And to be able to call your work an award winner, particularly if you can list a reputable award people have actually heard of, is always a plus, and can add some pizzazz to your marketing materials. I would love to add into my e-mail signature, after my name and novel name, "Reputable Writing Contest Best New Mystery Novel 2010."

So how about it? Other than the PSWA contest, which I have heard of, does anyone know of any other reputable contests for authors published by smaller presses? Having a list handy would be a good tool for writers to have as soon as their latest book is published.

You might want to check out "Poets and Writers" magazine for May/June, 2010. They have some contests listed.
