Here's a piece by a former Border's Employee

Here's a detailed article by a former Border's employee, telling of the chain's demise from his POV inside the organization.

I'll reserve my comments for a later time...

I read this and I think it is so sad about all the employees losing their job, but what happened is their own darn fault--plus the stupid way the whole publishing business has been set up over the years to do business with bookstores. Times are changing that's for sure--good, bad or indifferent, it is all going to be different.

Oh, and Billie, you don't have to apologize to me, people are going to do what they want to do. It's your blog, go for it.

Shows you what happens when the corporate mindset loses focus. To the executive, the goal is money and prestigue. To the customer and reader, the goal is enoying a good book. Borders started downhill when it stopped being a bookseller and tried to turn into, well, I don't know what it turned into at the end. But if you don't offer a good product, you won't make a profit. Borders had a good thing going but messed it up with the desire to "expand" and make money with everything except books.

I've only just moved to a town that had a Borders. I talked to them this spring about my new book, A CASE OF HOMETOWN BLUES, and the clerk was interested personally but told me there was nothing she could do to stock the book locally.

That plays right into what the article said. So sad. The thing is that Ann Arbor is only 30 miles down the road. Would have been so nice...

Wendy, find other places to have booksignings--sometimes a book store is the least favorable places and often the hardest to get your money from.
