DorothyL Best Reads of 2011

The results are in for DorothyL's annual compilation of the best reads of the year submitted by participants on the largest listserve of mystery readers in the world. Readers submitted books by 787 different authors. No wonder most of us don't make much money. It's a crowded field.

The list is sorted by how many readers mentioned a particular author. Louise Penny ranked number one. No surprise there. Not only is her latest, A Trick of the Light, doing extremely well, but she has many books out, and the list counts all books by an author that are on any reader's top reads list.

I am pleased to report I was tied for 38th. Not bad for a list that contains 787 authors. And each of my books was on at least one list.

Of course the drop off from Louise Penny at number 1 to Mike Orenduff at number 38 is steep. She received six times as many mentions as I did. I only wish I had one sixth of her royalties.

With just a quick look at the list, I saw Marilyn Meredith, W.S. Gager and myself on the list, too. Good represenation.

Mike,

I've been reading The Pot Thief Who Studied Phythagoras for the past couple of nights. I'll finish it tonight, but I'm having a great time with it. I am a professional archaeologist, so I understand the tensions you're exploring. This is a beautiful book.

Congrats Mike. Will try and hunt up the list. I've been off Dorothy L for a couple of months. Need to get back up to speed.

Congratulations, Mike! That's quite an accomplishment. Also, congrats to Marja McGraw, Marilyn Meredith and W.S. Gager. Way to go!

The answer to Marilyn's "Where is this list?" is an interesting story. Some participants on DorothyL are not fond of their lists being compiled. The listing of best reads was just a spontaneous thing that people did at the end of the year to share with their listmates. Some people didn't like the idea of it becoming a more formal activity with a master list. Furthermore, the person who started compiling the list puts the results on her website rather than on DorothyL. Most people enjoy seeing the grand totals, but it a sensitive subject for a some DorothyL members.

As with most "lists," this one has a history. It began a decade or so ago with a few people posting their fave reads at the end of the year. This has morphed into today where one person compiles all the lists and the lists have to be set up in a certain format or they aren't used. Feelings run high. Some authors campaign for places on peoples' lists. It's pretty out of control. It's the DL way!

Kit, a DLer from way back but who goes "no mail" for long periods of time when the posts go up in flames, which they do on a regular basis.

Marilyn Meredith always belongs on the top of any list. A very talented lady, not to mention such a nice person.

Thanks, Bonnie, you're sweet.

I had two mentions, for two different books, Angel Lost and Bears with Us.
