Social Media helpful for book sales?

One of my favorite authors, Hilary Davidson, has some interesting thoughts on how, if at all, social media can help authors in the selling their book:

I find social media is mostly about authors talking to other authors, except perhaps Pinterest. Because writing is a solitary activity, we gain a sense of community and shared experiences from social media.

To sell my children's books, I need to connect with my readers or rather those who buy books for kids in a more direct way though readings, signings, school visits and community events as I describe in my most recent OTP post below.

I find Pinterest to be the exception. Here a lively and colorful cover and popular story idea, like "Ants on a Log" sells books. Beryl

In most part of the country, winter is a good time for curling up with a book inside. Here in the Southwest, it is the summer. We do our gardening quick in the early morning but in the over-100 degree afternoons, it is time to draw the drapes and catch up on reading. These covers are really intriguing.
